Line Sentinel Inc.

Line Sentinel Inc. was established in 2015 and purchased the proprietary pipeline leak detection system, LineGuard, from WorleyParsons in 2016.

LineGuard was developed in the early 1990’s with the first installation completed in 1994. Today there are over 40 installations across North America on applications such as crude oil, refined products, seawater and gas.

Our Products

Line Sentinel Inc. offers our Leak Detection System in two formats;

1. A Standalone Linux base box that will connect to your existing SCADA system via your existing network.

2. A virtual Linux based box that resides in your VMM server and connects to your existing SCADA system.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1       What is the basis of your leak detection system?

The LINE SENTINEL system is a software-based system that performs material balance calculations to detect and locate leaks

Q2       How does your system work?

The LINE SENTINEL system mathematically separates the pipeline into slices between pressure measurement points and the uses the model of an electrical transmission line (RLC circuit) to calculate the fluid properties within each slice. Series resistance (R) depends on the pipeline friction factor and is also proportional to flow rate. The series inductance (L) represents the inertia of the fluid mass within the slice. The parallel capacitance (C) stores the pressure-induced fluid linepack.

Q3       What is Linepack?

Linepack is the amount of product in the pipeline at standard conditions.

Q4       Can you locate leaks?

Yes the LINE SENTINEL system is capable of locating leaks. The LINE SENTINEL system has been proven to locate leaks within 5% of the meter spacing or 1 km (whichever is greater).

Q5       How small of a leak can you detect?

The accuracy of the LINE SENTINEL system is dependent upon the accuracy of the metering installed on the pipeline. The LINE SENTINEL system has been able to detect leaks as small as 1-2% of pipeline flow rate, by actual fluid withdrawal tests.

Q6       What types of liquid or gas does your system apply to?

The LINE SENTINEL system can be applied to single phase gas and liquid pipelines. LINE SENTINEL is currently operating on pipelines carrying natural gas, NGL’s, diesel, crude oils, jet fuel, and other hydrocarbons related to the petrochemical industry. Line Sentinel is also installed on seawater pipelines.

Q7       Can your system handle batched lines?

As long as the LINE SENTINEL system knows what the product is and the time that it entered the pipeline, the LINE SENTINEL system will be able to track the batch.

Q8       How much support will I need once this system is installed?

Little to no support is required once the LINE SENTINEL system is installed, however LINE SENTINEL Inc. recommends at least once a year our professionals analyze the results of leak simulations or other testing, to ensure the system is fully optimized

Q9       What are the advantages / benefits of your system?

  • Installs seamlessly with existing SCADA systems.
  • Requires no additional pipeline hardware in an optimized operation.
  • Provides logs, alarms, and data retention to suit operator preferences.
  • Remains independent of upgrades to SCADA systems.
  • Complies with CSA and API standards.
  • Connects to Line Sentinel Inc. product support via modem, telephone, or Internet.

Q10     How efficient is your system at minimizing false alarms?

The LINE SENTINEL system is very efficient at minimizing false alarms. This can be attributed to the Linepack calculation performed by the LINE SENTINEL system, which enables it to model the storage of the pipeline, and this allows for greater accuracy in leak detection and location.

Q11     How does pipeline start up and shut down affect your system?

Neither pipeline start up nor shut down affect the operation of the LINE SENTINEL system. LINE SENTINEL can operate under both steady state and transient conditions. The LINE SENTINEL system is capable of handling pipeline start up and shut down without creating false alarms and without changing alarm thresholds.

Q12     How does booster pump start up and shut down affect your system?

The LINE SENTINEL system is capable of operating without generating false alarms or changing alarm thresholds for both pump start up and shut down.

Q13     What are the requirements for your system?

LINE SENTINEL has basic instrumentation requirements applicable to all fluid pipelines. Pressure transmitters, temperature transmitters, and flow meters are required at all inlets and outlets. Pressure transmitters are required at all junctions between the mainline and laterals. In the case of batched lines or lines with a wide density range, density indication is required. As well data received by the LINE SENTINEL system must be time stamped.

Q14     How quickly does your system detect and / or locate leaks?

The time taken to detect and/or locate a leak is dependent upon numerous factors. These include: line length and diameter, metering accuracy, quality of data received by the LINE SENTINEL system, and data update times.

Q15     Can your system estimate the leak size?

Yes. The LINE SENTINEL system is capable of estimating leak size.

Our Services

Line Sentinel staff’s extensive experience can aid any pipeline operating company with expert assistance in the selection and application of the most reliable, affordable and suitable system to meet operational needs.

  • Analysis of existing infrastructure and the ability to apply leak detection systems. This can be:
    • Evaluation of current instrumentation and SCADA/Control systems
    • Level of confidence that operations can expect based on the existing measurement devices
    • What speed of response to a potential leak may be expected based on overall system lag
  • Analysis of the type of PLDS to be applied:
    • Which will be best, an external or internal system?
    • Which regulations or laws apply?
    • Will the selection meet applicable regulations?
  • Provide services complementary to the deployment of PLDS:
    • Aid with any instrument and control selection or improvement engineering
    • Work with the operator’s preferred engineering consultant
    • Provide project management services specific to PLDS applications
  • Provide after-installation services such as:
    • Operator training
    • Ongoing support for analysis of data, i.e simulation test results
    • Recommendations for potential upgrades or the addition/removal etc. of laterals dependant on changes to pipeline operation
